English 9/10 and English Literature

Course content of English Literature 11/12

English literature is a course that help students dive deeper into reading and writing. The course include novels, plays, and poems from writers. They also get to learn how authors use literary devices. Students get to share opinions and compose essays. they discuss how themes connect to certain aspects of life. After they take this course, the students should have a stronger reading skill and a deeper appreciation for how literature reflects the world around them.

Skills developed in English Literature 11/12

English 11/12 help students become thoughtful writers and confident readers. They learn to analyse texts and interpret meanings that are deeper than the surface. They also learn how drafting essas help build organization, clarity, and creativity. These skills help students not only in the classroom, but also in life. Reading different authors also help students understand different cultures and voices from these cultures. They see how stories connect to issues and emotions. Literature teaches students to discuss with others. By taking this course, students will be more aware of the world around them and be open minded.

Assessment of English Literature 11/12

In English Literature 11 and 12, assessment focuses on growth instead of only grades. Students are evaluated through essays, creative writing, discussions, and class projects. These assignments measure how well they can interpret texts and express ideas clearly. There are no longer provincial exams for these courses. Instead, students complete the Grade 12 Literacy Assessment. It is more about communication than memorization. This change gives teachers freedom to design lessons the way they like.

Intresting things about literature 12

Literature 12 is a English course that explores famous books, poems, and plays. The content is from different time periods and countries. Well known writers such as Shakespeare and Chaucer's content aare introduced and read in this class. The class helps students about some big ideas such as identity and power. A fun part of the class is finding out how old stories are connected to today's world, showing that literature never gets old.

English 9/10

Learning Objectives for English 9

Students should know how to write texts, such as novels articles and short stories. They also should know how to make visuals, inclunding posters and photographs. Lastly, they need to be able to combine oral skills and writing skills.

Strategies and processes 

Reading strategies, such as using context clues, word structure, visulizing, questioning, predicting, and previewing text are also important skills.

Oral language strategies is also important. This includes being able to focus on the speaker, asking questions to clarify, and expressing opinions.

Features of oral language 

Tone, gesture, and pace is important for oral language.

Multi-paragraphing

Students should know how to use multiple paragraphs to enhance a essay's contents.​

Figurative language, formal language, and tone of writing should be emphasized.

presentations should have appropriate techniques and use correct formats.

Students should know:

Text forms and genres 

literary or thematic categories (e.g., adventure, fable, fairy tale, fantasy, folklore, historical, horror, legend, mystery, mythology, picture book, science fiction, biography, essay, journalism, manual, memoir, personal narrative, speech) and narrative structures: circular, iterative, cyclical.

 

Text features 

Some text features include typography (bold, italics, underlined font), font style, guide words, key words, titles, diagrams, captions, labels, maps, charts, illustrations, tables, photographs, and sidebars/text boxes.

Strategies and processes

Reading strategies 

There are many strategies that readers use when making sense of text. Students consider what strategies they need to use to “unpack” text. They employ strategies with increasing independence depending on the purpose, text, and context. Strategies include predicting, questioning, paraphrasing, making connections, summarizing, and reflecting.

Oral language strategies 

Including speaking with expression, connecting to listeners, asking questions to clarify, listening for specifics, summarizing, paraphrasing 

​

Writing processes 

There are various writing processes depending on context. These include determining audience and purpose, generating or gathering ideas, free writing, making notes, drafting, revising, and/or editing.

Assessment of English 9/10

At Palmer, English 9/10 focuses on building literacy, writing, and interpretation skills. Grade 9 students are evaluated using a proficiency scale: Emerging, Developing, Proficient, and Extending. Grade 10 students receive traditional letter grades or percentages. Literacy and numeracy assessments are used as diagnostic tools to measure overall skills across the school system.

In grade 9, there are no standardized tests as no high school credits can be earned in grade 9. As such, assessment is based on only writing projects, certain grammar/unit tests by your teacher, and participation.

In English 10, there are standardized testing, so a part of your grade is based on the testing results. Also, completion of English 10 gives one 4 high school credits, so grade 10 evaluation uses letter grades. 

Intresting things about English 9/10

English 9 offers students opportunities to engage with lots of texts from different cultures/time periods. Students explore themes through studying stories novels and poems. The texts are chosen to help students develop critical thinking and a deeper understanding of how language can shape and reflect different people's experiences.

To add to reading and analysis, English 9/10 encourages self expression and creativity through wdiffrent forms of writing such as esasy and paragraphs. students also will do narrative writing, persuasive essays, and oral presentations. The course focuses on building basic skills such as organizing ideas and presenting clearly. Overall, the English course supports students in becoming more advanced in reading and writing.
